Every price is from the brand's own shop page on 25 and 26 September 2026, for the 1 L pack where one exists, and comes from our monthly Ghee Price Index. Offers change weekly, so treat these as the level, not the exact rupee.

Six of the ten name the Gir breed and describe a curd or Bilona method. Where they differ is freshness and proof. None of the other nine product pages says the jar is made after you order. We cook yours once the order comes in and send the packing video on WhatsApp before it ships, which is why our jar is first.

Amul now sells a Gir cow ghee at ₹1,400 a litre. Its shop page does not say how it is made, so it sits below the jars that do. Why ghee prices move through the year is on ghee price in India.

Why does A2 Bilona cow ghee cost ₹2,400 a litre?

Because it takes 30 to 35 litres of Gir cow milk and most of two days to make 1 kg of it. That is our own number from the kettle, not a figure from a brochure, and you are welcome to visit our kitchen in Gir Somnath and watch it for yourself. Desi cows give less milk than crossbred dairy cows, and curd-churned butter gives less ghee than skimmed cream.

Here is how a batch goes at our place. The milk sets into curd overnight, 8 to 12 hours. The curd is churned for 30 to 45 minutes until the makkhan separates. The makkhan cooks slowly in a matki on a wood chulha for 45 to 90 minutes, and comes off the flame when the bubbling goes quiet and the solids turn golden brown. Varsha tastes it before it goes into a jar. A burnt or undercooked batch never gets packed.

Per spoon, the price looks different. A teaspoon is 5 mL, so a 1 L jar holds 200 of them. At ₹2,399 a litre, our A2 Gir cow ghee works out to about ₹12 a teaspoon. A cheap dairy tin at ₹705 is about ₹3.53. For the one spoon on your roti, the difference is about ₹8 a day. The full method is on the Bilona method.

A2 cow ghee vs regular cow ghee: what is the difference?

A2 cow ghee comes from Indian desi breeds such as Gir; regular cow ghee usually comes from dairy milk with no breed named. A1 and A2 are two forms of a milk protein, beta-casein. Ghee is almost all fat: the FSSAI standard for ghee (Food Products Standards, Chapter 2.1, 2023) requires at least 99.5% milk fat and no more than 0.5% moisture, so very little protein is left in a jar either way.

India's food regulator has gone back and forth on the label. On 21 August 2024 FSSAI told food businesses that A1 and A2 claims on milk-fat products such as ghee were misleading and should come off labels. On 26 August 2024 it withdrew that advisory "for further consultation and engagement with stakeholders". So A2 on a ghee label is legal today, and it tells you about the herd.

That is why we make A2 ghee from Gir milk: the breed changes the taste, the colour, and the farm behind the jar. Buy A2 for those reasons, not for a promise on the lid. The protein side of the argument is on A2 vs A1 ghee, and what A2 means on a jar is on what is A2 ghee. If you are weighing a Gir label against an ordinary one, see Gir cow ghee vs regular ghee.

Which ghee should you buy for each job?

Buy by the plate: cow ghee for the food you taste it in, buffalo ghee for sweets and parathas, and oil for the kadhai.

Authentic Urban A2 Gir cow ghee

You taste it cold and every day, so aroma and grain matter most here.

Tadka and everyday cooking

Authentic Urban A2 Gir cow ghee

A teaspoon in the tadka carries the smell of toasted milk through the whole dal.

Paratha, halwa, ladoo, festival sweets

How to check a cow ghee label before you buy

Six questions, answered from the jar and one website, in about two minutes. Screenshot this list and use it in the shop.

1. Does the front say cow?

"Pure ghee" or "desi ghee" does not name the animal. Cow ghee should say cow.

2. Does Bilona come with the word curd or dahi?

Bilona means curd churned into makkhan, then cooked. A Bilona label that never mentions curd may be cream ghee with a traditional name.

3. Does A2 come with a breed?

Gir, Kankrej, Sahiwal, or another desi breed, named. A2 with no breed and no farm is a claim, not information.

4. Is the FSSAI licence number printed, and does it match?

Search the 14-digit number on foscos.fssai.gov.in. The business name and address should match the jar.

5. Is the pack date recent?

Ghee keeps well sealed, but a jar packed a year ago has used most of its life on a shelf.

6. Does the price make sense for the claim?

We need 30 to 35 litres of milk for 1 kg of cow ghee. "A2 Gir Bilona" at a supermarket-tin price does not add up.

For a premium jar, ask the brand for the lab report of your batch and compare it with the FSSAI limits for ghee: moisture at most 0.5%, milk fat at least 99.5%, free fatty acids at most 2.0%, a negative Baudouin test, and no β-sitosterol. The last two are the checks that catch vegetable oil and vanaspati mixed into ghee. We test our ghee against these limits every month. How to read a report line by line is on ghee lab test report.

How to check cow ghee at home

Warm a spoonful. Good cow ghee melts clear and golden and smells of toasted milk. A waxy, flat, or burnt smell is a warning. Let a little set at room temperature: slow-cooked ghee usually forms grains as it cools. Ours always does, and the grain is finest in winter.

These checks catch a stale or badly made jar. They cannot tell you the breed, whether it is A2, or whether it was made from curd. That is what the label and the brand's proof are for, and why we send a video of your jar. The full set of home tests is on how to identify pure ghee. Why the grain forms is on why ghee is grainy.

Which cow ghee is best for babies and kids?

The same jar you would eat from yourself: A2 Bilona from a named breed, freshly packed, and smelling clean when warmed. A child's portion is small, so the higher price per spoon matters less here than anywhere else. When to start ghee and how much by age is a question for your paediatrician first. More on best ghee for babies in India.

Once the jar is open, use a dry spoon, keep the lid shut, and store it away from the stove and sunlight. A sealed jar keeps 9 to 12 months at room temperature in our experience. More on ghee storage and shelf life.

Whichever brand you choose, smell it warm, look for grain once it cools, check the FSSAI number on FoSCoS, and ask for proof of the batch you are paying for.

With us, that proof comes to you. We cook your jar after you order, from grass-fed Gir cow milk set to curd, and send the packing video on WhatsApp before it ships. FAQ

Which is the best cow ghee brand in India?

Our pick is Authentic Urban A2 Gir cow ghee. It is made only from the milk of grass-fed village Gir cows that graze near the Gir forest, with no hormones, set to curd, hand-churned, and cooked in a matki on a wood chulha, only after you order. You get a video of your own jar being packed, and it costs ₹2,399 a litre, less than most Gir Bilona jars. GirOrganic, Gavyamart, and Rosier Foods are the next strongest.

Is Amul Pure Ghee the same as Amul Cow Ghee?

No. Amul sells them as two separate 1 L products, and on the Amul shop in September 2026 Pure Ghee was listed at ₹660 and Cow Ghee at ₹705. "Pure ghee" on any label does not name the animal, so it can be cow, buffalo, or a mix. If you want cow ghee specifically, buy the pack that says cow on the front.

Does A2 cow ghee have to come from Gir cows?

No. A2 on a ghee jar means the milk came from Indian desi breeds, and Gir is only the best-known name. Kankrej, Sahiwal, Rathi, and other desi cows are also sold as A2. What matters is that the label names the breed. A jar that says A2 but names no breed and no farm is asking you to take the claim on trust.

Is organic cow ghee better than A2 Bilona ghee?

They answer different questions. Organic is about how the farm grows fodder and treats the animals, and needs a certificate you can look up. Bilona is about the method: curd churned into butter, then cooked. A2 is about the breed. A jar can be one, two, or all three. Decide which of the three you care about, then check that exact word on the label.

Why does cow ghee change colour from one jar to the next?

Fodder. In the monsoon our cows eat green grass and the ghee comes out more yellow. In winter the milk is richer and the grain is finer. In summer the ghee often stays liquid in the jar. Small-batch cow ghee moves with the season, so a jar that looks exactly the same in June and December is worth a question.

Why is desi cow ghee grainy, and is grainy better?

Slow-cooked ghee that cools slowly forms grains, called danedar in Hindi. Our cow ghee cools grainy every time. Grain says the ghee cooled slowly; it does not prove the milk or the method on its own. A smooth jar can still be good ghee, and a grainy jar can still be cream ghee, so read the label too.

Is it safe to buy cow ghee on Amazon or Flipkart?

It can be, if you check the seller. The listing should be sold by the brand or its named distributor, and the pack date on the jar you receive should be recent. Reject a jar with a broken seal or a best-before date close to expiry. For A2 Bilona ghee, buying from the maker directly gets you the freshest jar.
