Ghee Benefits for Men: What Holds Up and How Much a Day

Updated 11 min read men • how much ghee • heart and waist

The ghee benefits for men that hold up are ordinary ones: 1 to 2 teaspoons a day on dal, roti, or khichdi helps the body take in vitamins A, D, E, and K, adds taste, and gives about 44 kcal of fuel a spoon. The ad claims, more testosterone, more sperm, more muscle, have no trial behind them. For most men the real question is how much, and the answer shrinks as the waist grows.

What are the benefits of ghee for men?

For men, ghee is a cooking fat with a few real uses: it carries fat-soluble vitamins, it makes a plain meal satisfying, and it is a clean source of calories. A healthy man can eat 1 to 2 teaspoons a day, the limit ICMR-NIN's 2024 dietary guidelines set for ghee or butter. It does not work as a hormone or muscle supplement.

This page is for men, and the women who cook for them, deciding where the ghee jar fits in a man's day. The general list, for everyone at the table, is on ghee benefits. If you came for testosterone or fertility alone, the studies are laid out on does ghee increase testosterone.

Which ghee benefits for men are real?

Two hold up, one is kitchen sense, and the rest are sales lines. Here is every benefit you will see on a jar or a reel, and what is actually known.

The claim

Verdict

What is known

Helps the body take in vitamins A, D, E, and K

Holds up

ICMR-NIN lists these four as fat-soluble vitamins, so a little fat on a vegetable meal helps. A teaspoon of ghee also carries about 42 µg of vitamin A itself, per USDA.

Gives energy

Holds up, as calories

About 44 kcal a teaspoon. That is fuel, the same as any fat. It is not a stamina drug.

Makes rotis and dal satisfying, so you snack less

Kitchen sense

Fat slows a meal down. No trial has measured this for ghee in men, so treat it as a cooking reason, not a diet rule.

Boosts testosterone

Not shown

No trial has given healthy men ghee and seen testosterone rise. ICMR-NIN says the liver makes the cholesterol hormones need whenever required.

Raises sperm count

Not shown

The ghee studies behind this claim are small, have no comparison group, or were done on animals.

Builds muscle

No

USDA lists 0.28 g of protein in 100 g of ghee. Muscle comes from protein and lifting.

Protects a man's heart

Not shown

One rural survey is quoted everywhere. It shows a link, not a cause, and ICMR-NIN says saturated fat raises LDL. Details below.

Grows a beard or stops hair fall

No

Beard and scalp hair follow genes and hormones. Ghee on dry skin softens it and that is all.

The vitamin point is the one worth acting on. A plate of palak, carrot, or methi with no fat at all wastes some of what is in it. A teaspoon of ghee in the tadka is enough; a second ladle adds nothing but calories. Ghee itself has no vitamin D, which USDA lists at zero, so it does not fix a low vitamin D report.

How much ghee should a man eat a day?

One to two teaspoons a day (5 to 10 g) for a healthy man, and one if his waist or reports are up. ICMR-NIN gives adult men a visible fat budget for all oil, ghee, and butter together: 30 g a day for a sedentary man, 40 g with moderate activity, and 50 g with heavy work. Ghee sits inside that budget, not on top of it.

Your report decides the number.

For adult men. A 5 ml teaspoon holds 5 g of ghee. If a doctor has set your fat intake, follow that.

To see how small 30 g is: ICMR-NIN's sample day for a 65 kg man who sits most of the day comes to about 2,100 kcal and uses 30 g of oil for all three meals. Two parathas fried in ghee can use that up before lunch. In our own home in Gir Somnath each of us eats 1 to 2 teaspoons of ghee a day on roti, dal, and khichdi. The spoon only grows in winter, in sweets like adadiya pak and gond, and on those days we skip it on the roti. The amount for every age is on how much ghee per day, and for your whole household, try our ghee and oil calculator.

Is ghee good or bad for a man's heart and belly?

At 1 to 2 teaspoons it is fine for most men; past that it works against the heart. ICMR-NIN says saturated fat raises total and LDL cholesterol and the risk of heart attack and stroke. Ghee is about 62% saturated fat, per USDA, so 2 teaspoons bring about 6.2 g of it.

The belly matters as much as the report. ICMR-NIN treats a waist over 90 cm in men as a sign of higher risk for chronic disease, and uses a BMI of 18.5 to 23 as normal for Indians, lower than the Western cut-off. Many Indian men with a "normal" weight carry their fat at the waist. Three extra teaspoons of ghee a day is about 132 kcal, every day, with nothing on the plate to show for it.

The Rajasthan survey everyone quotes

Many pages say men who eat more ghee get less heart disease. The line comes from a 2010 review in the journal Ayu, which cites a survey of a rural Rajasthan population where men who ate more ghee had less coronary artery disease. A survey like that shows a link, not a cause: those men may have walked and worked in the fields all day. The same paper warns that vanaspati, sold as "vegetable ghee", is the fat tied to heart risk, and its own experiment was on rats, fed a diet of 10% ghee for 4 weeks. None of it is a reason for a man with a desk job to add spoons.

If your LDL is high, the spoon comes down to ½ or 1 teaspoon and your doctor sets it; what the report numbers mean is on ghee for cholesterol. If the waist is the problem, the plate swaps are on ghee for weight loss.

Does ghee give men energy and stamina?

It gives energy in the plain sense, about 44 kcal a teaspoon, and nothing beyond that. Fat digests slowly, so a teaspoon on hot dal at lunch keeps you going longer than chai and biscuits. That is why a farm worker in the old days could eat more ghee: he burned it. A man who sits until 7 pm burns far less, and the same spoons turn into waist.

Stamina, in the gym or in bed, is not something ghee has been shown to raise. Tiredness that lasts weeks has causes worth checking: short sleep, low haemoglobin, thyroid, sugar, or low mood. For training days, how much ghee fits and whether it belongs before a session is on ghee before a workout.

Does ghee increase testosterone or sperm count?

Not as far as any trial has shown. ICMR-NIN notes that cholesterol is the starting material for many hormones, and that the liver makes it whenever the body needs it, so a healthy man does not need to eat extra cholesterol for his hormones. A teaspoon of ghee has about 13 mg, per USDA. What is true is that very low-fat eating is not a good idea either; a normal Indian plate with 1 to 2 teaspoons of ghee and some oil is enough fat.

The studies behind the testosterone and sperm claims, what raises testosterone more than food, and when to get a test are on what studies show about ghee and testosterone. If you and your partner have been trying for a year without a pregnancy, both of you should see a doctor; a jar is not a fertility plan.

Is desi ghee with milk good for men?

A teaspoon of ghee in a glass of warm milk is fine as a treat, and it counts towards the day's 1 to 2 teaspoons. It adds about 44 kcal and some taste. Many families give it to men at night "for strength", and there is no study showing it raises strength, stamina, or hormones. The milk brings the protein and calcium; the ghee brings fat.

For an underweight young man who wants to gain, a glass of milk with a teaspoon of ghee is an easy way to add calories. For a man with a belly, it is the first thing to drop. If you drink it for sleep, what milk at night actually does is on ghee for sleep.

Cow ghee or buffalo ghee: which is better for men?

Neither has been tested for men's health, so pick by use. Cow ghee is lighter in taste and colour, and suits the daily teaspoon on dal and roti. Buffalo ghee is richer, whiter, and sets firmer, and suits paratha, halwa, and winter sweets. Both are nearly pure milk fat, so a teaspoon of either is roughly the same calories.

"Cow or buffalo, which is better for me?" is one of the questions we get most on WhatsApp. Our answer for a man watching his waist is the jar he will measure, not the one with the bigger claim. The side-by-side is on cow vs buffalo ghee.

Which men should cut ghee or ask a doctor first?

Men with a heart problem, high LDL, diabetes, fatty liver, gallstones, or a waist well over 90 cm should keep ghee small and let a doctor set the amount. So should any man whose doctor has already put him on a low-fat diet.

See a doctor, not a diet page, for chest pain or breathlessness on walking, erection problems that keep happening, low sex drive for months, or no pregnancy after a year of trying. These can be early signs of heart disease, diabetes, or a hormone problem, and none of them is a reason to try more ghee first. Keep taking any prescribed statin or blood pressure tablet. The full list of who should cut ghee right down is on who should not eat ghee.

A daily ghee checklist for men

Screenshot this, or send it to whoever cooks at home.

  1. Measure your spoon once: a 5 ml teaspoon holds 5 g of ghee. A serving spoon is often three times that.
  2. Keep ghee at 1 to 2 teaspoons a day, on dal, roti, khichdi, or a tadka, and count it inside your cooking fat.
  3. Measure your waist at the navel. Over 90 cm, go to 1 teaspoon and cut fried food and sweets first.
  4. Get a lipid profile and fasting sugar once a year after 30, and take the numbers to your doctor.
  5. Eat protein at every meal: dal, curd, paneer, eggs, or chicken. Ghee brings almost none.
  6. Winter sweets like gond or adadiya pak count as ghee. On those days, skip the extra spoon on roti.
  7. Low energy, low sex drive, or no pregnancy after a year of trying: see a doctor before buying anything for it.

Which ghee for a man's daily teaspoon?

No ghee is a men's ghee, so buy for taste and trust, and keep the spoon small. Good ghee smells of toasted milk when warmed, runs clear when melted, and often sets grainy as it cools. How to check any jar is on how to identify pure ghee, and our ranking of the cow ghee on sale is best cow ghee in India.

For the daily teaspoon we would pick our own A2 Gir cow ghee: milk from grass-fed Gir cows, set to curd overnight, churned, and cooked on a wood chulha in a matki, made after you order, with a video of your jar sent on WhatsApp. At ₹2,399 a litre, a 5 ml teaspoon costs about ₹12. Our Jafarabadi buffalo ghee is the richer jar for paratha and winter sweets. We test every month against the FSSAI limits; the steps are on how we make ghee.

FAQ

Desi ghee ke fayde purush ke liye kya hain?

Desi ghee purushon ke liye khana hai, dawai nahi.

Is ghee good for men over 50?

Yes, in the same 1 to 2 teaspoons a day, and often closer to one. Most men move less after 50, so the fat budget shrinks, and heart disease, diabetes, and high LDL become more common. Get a lipid profile and sugar test before deciding the amount, and if you take a statin or blood pressure tablets, keep taking them. Soft meals like khichdi with a teaspoon of ghee suit a smaller appetite.

Should a man eat ghee on an empty stomach in the morning?

There is no need to. The popular morning spoon is a tradition, not a tested benefit, and a teaspoon on an empty stomach does the same thing as a teaspoon on lunch dal: about 44 kcal of fat. If you already eat ghee with meals, a morning spoon on top only pushes you past 2 teaspoons. Men with acidity or gallbladder trouble often feel worse with fat on an empty stomach.

Can a man with diabetes eat ghee?

Usually yes, in a small amount, with the doctor setting the number. Ghee has no sugar, but it is mostly saturated fat, and diabetes already raises the risk of heart disease, so the LDL matters as much as the sugar. Keep to ½ to 1 teaspoon a day unless your doctor says otherwise, and get your lipid profile checked with your sugar tests.

Does ghee help a man's joint and knee pain?

Not in any trial of men with knee pain. Joint pain in men over 40 is often wear and tear, extra weight, or gout, and each needs its own answer. Losing weight takes load off the knees far more than any spoon adds. Ghee in the diet is fine at 1 to 2 teaspoons. Swelling, redness, or pain that wakes you at night needs a doctor, not a new diet.

Is ghee better than refined oil for men?

Not better, different. Ghee is mostly saturated fat; oils like groundnut, mustard, and rice bran bring the unsaturated fats ICMR-NIN wants in the day. The sensible Indian kitchen uses both: oil for most of the cooking and 1 to 2 teaspoons of ghee for taste on dal, roti, and khichdi. For deep frying, use oil. A man with high LDL should lean further towards oil.
