Black Coffee With Ghee: Benefits, Side Effects, How Much
Black coffee with ghee can keep you fuller for a few hours, but it does not sharpen focus or burn fat. In a small 2021 trial, a ghee coffee left people fuller than black coffee and did nothing for a concentration test. Start with 1 teaspoon of ghee (about 44 kcal) in one cup, blended, and count it in your day's 1 to 2 teaspoons.
What are the benefits of black coffee with ghee?
The one benefit with any evidence is fullness: a ghee coffee kept people fuller for about three hours than plain black coffee. It did not improve focus, and no trial has tested fat loss, energy crashes, or gut health. It is a richer, sugar-free morning cup, and a teaspoon of ghee adds about 44 kcal.
Many pages on this search list 10 to 30 benefits without naming a study. There are two, both small, both by the same team, and both tested a cup with ghee and MCT oil. Here is each popular claim next to what is actually known. The same goes for "coffee with ghee" made with instant coffee or filter decoction: the ghee does the same thing in each.
The claim
Verdict
What is known
Keeps you full till lunch
Partly
In a 6-person trial, a 250 kcal ghee and MCT coffee left people fuller for 3 hours than black coffee. It was compared with black coffee, not with a breakfast.
Sharper focus, better brain
Not shown
The same trial found no difference from black coffee on a timed concentration test. The caffeine does the waking up.
Steady energy, no crash
Not tested
No trial has measured a "crash" with ghee coffee. Dropping the sugar from milk coffee is the likelier reason people feel steadier.
Burns fat, helps weight loss
No trial
Each teaspoon adds 44 kcal. It helps only if it replaces something bigger, like a sweet breakfast.
Good for the gut (butyrate)
Too small to say
A teaspoon carries about 0.16 g of butyric acid. No human study has tested that amount in coffee.
Lowers inflammation
No effect seen
One 6-person trial saw no change, up or down, in inflammatory white blood cells over 3 hours after the cup.
Dairy-free creamer
Lactose, mostly yes. Allergy, no
Ghee is 99.5% fat with about 0.28 g milk protein per 100 g, so most lactose-intolerant adults manage it. A milk allergy is a different matter.
Trials: Current Developments in Nutrition, 2021. Ghee numbers: USDA FoodData Central. Checked 26 September 2026.
The lactose row needs one more line. Ghee has very little lactose, but it is still dairy, and people with a milk protein allergy should not use it as a creamer. The detail is on does ghee have casein. The same teaspoon also carries about 42 µg of vitamin A, useful but small; your plate of sabzi matters more.
What did the ghee coffee studies actually find?
They found more fullness, no gain in focus, and no change in inflammation, in six people. Crampton, Jackson, Streight, and Little published two short trial reports in Current Developments in Nutrition in 2021, both on the same "bulletproof" style cup made with ghee and MCT oil.
The trials
What they found
Who
6 healthy young adults who drink coffee daily (5 women, average age 25)
The cup
About 300 ml coffee blended with 15 ml MCT oil and 15 ml grass-fed ghee, about 250 kcal
Compared with
The same coffee, black (about 1 kcal), a week apart, in random order
Concentration test
No difference between the two cups
Fullness over 3 hours
Higher after the ghee cup, and people expected to eat less
Inflammation markers
No change in monocytes (a white blood cell) at 1 and 3 hours
From the two published abstracts, Current Developments in Nutrition 5 (Suppl 2), 2021. Checked 26 September 2026.
Read these results with care. Six people is too few to prove much. The ghee cup had about 250 kcal and the black coffee had 1, so feeling fuller after the bigger cup is expected; nobody has compared it with a normal breakfast of the same calories. Half the fat was MCT oil, not ghee. What the trials do settle is the focus claim: in the one test, adding fat to coffee did not beat black coffee.
How much ghee should you put in coffee?
Put 1 teaspoon (5 g) of ghee in one cup, after a first week at half a teaspoon. That teaspoon is about 44 kcal and 3.1 g of saturated fat, and it is half of the 1 to 2 teaspoons of ghee a day that ICMR-NIN's 2024 dietary guidelines set for adults. The tablespoon in American recipes is for a cup that replaces breakfast.
USDA FoodData Central per 100 g (ghee 876 kcal, brewed coffee 1, whole milk 61, sugar 387); teaspoon 5 g, tablespoon 12.8 g. The ghee and MCT cup as reported by the 2021 trial. Checked 26 September 2026.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Black coffee, no ghee | 2 kcal |
| Black coffee + 1 tsp ghee | 45 kcal (where we would start) |
| Milk coffee, 2 tsp sugar | 100 kcal |
| Black coffee + 1 tbsp ghee | 114 kcal |
| Trial cup: 1 tbsp ghee + 1 tbsp MCT oil | 250 kcal |
A tablespoon of ghee is about 112 kcal and 7.9 g of saturated fat. ICMR-NIN counts saturated fat as high when more than 10 g a day comes from visible fats like ghee and butter, so one tablespoon cup uses most of that line before you have eaten anything. With a teaspoon, you still have room for ghee on your dal at lunch.

In our home in Gir Somnath, each of us eats 1 to 2 teaspoons of ghee a day, on roti, dal, and khichdi. If one of those teaspoons goes into your coffee, it comes off the roti. You can work out your home's daily ghee and oil for each person, and the full daily plan is on how much ghee per day.
How do you make ghee coffee (bulletproof coffee with ghee)?
Blend 150 ml of steaming black coffee with 1 teaspoon of ghee for 20 to 30 seconds, then drink it at once. Blending is the whole trick: it breaks the ghee into tiny drops so the cup turns pale and foamy. Stirred ghee floats as an oil slick.
Ghee coffee: one cup, 5 minutes
You need
- 150 ml hot black coffee: brewed, instant, or filter decoction topped up with hot water
- 1 tsp (5 g) ghee; ½ tsp in the first week
- A mixie with a small jar, a hand blender, or a milk frother
- Optional: a pinch of cinnamon or crushed elaichi
Steps
- Brew the coffee. It should still be steaming.
- Put the ghee in the jar or mug first.
- Pour in the coffee and blend 20 to 30 seconds, until the top is pale and foamy.
- Drink straight away; the foam settles in a few minutes.
About 45 kcal a cup, no sugar, no carbohydrate.
Safety with hot liquid: fill a mixie jar no more than half, hold the lid down with a folded cloth, and pulse. Never shake hot coffee in a closed bottle; the steam can push the lid off.
Why is my ghee coffee oily?
An oily layer means the fat did not break up. The coffee was not hot enough, it was stirred, or it was blended for less than 20 seconds. Blend another 10 seconds before adding more ghee; more ghee only makes a thicker slick. If the cup tastes bitter or smells burnt, smell the ghee on its own. At our kettle a batch cooked too far turns dark and smells burnt, and we never pack it, but coffee can hide that taste in a jar that has gone off.
Ghee also changes with the season. Ours sets grainy with a fine grain in winter and stays liquid in the jar in summer, and "why is it grainy?" is one of the questions we get most on WhatsApp. Either way it melts fully in hot coffee. Use a dry spoon, since water in the jar spoils ghee faster.
Variations that work
Cinnamon or elaichi blended in adds flavour without sugar. A teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa makes a mocha. For an iced cup, blend it hot as usual and then pour it over ice; cold coffee will not take the ghee. If you drink turmeric milk in the evening instead, that recipe is on turmeric ghee golden milk.
Is ghee better than butter or MCT oil in coffee?
Ghee is better than butter for most Indian kitchens: it tastes of toasted milk rather than grease, carries less milk protein, and keeps on the shelf. MCT oil (a fat made from coconut or palm kernel oil) is a different product that some people add alongside ghee; it is not a better version of ghee.
Ghee vs butter in coffee
| Factor | Ghee | Butter | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Butter with water and milk solids cooked out | Butter, with its water and milk solids | Tie |
| Lactose and milk protein | Traces only | More than ghee | Ghee ✓ |
| Taste in black coffee | Nutty, toasted milk | Creamy, can taste greasy | Ghee ✓ |
| Keeps in the kitchen | Months at room temperature | Fridge | Ghee ✓ |
| Saturated fat per spoon | High | High | Tie |
Verdict: Ghee for taste, shelf life, and dairy-sensitive stomachs. On saturated fat, they are close: a spoon of either counts the same.
The full butter comparison is on ghee vs butter, and MCT oil across keto, weight, and brain claims is on ghee vs MCT oil. If you add MCT oil, start at a teaspoon; the trial cup used a tablespoon of each and came to about 250 kcal.
When is the best time to drink ghee coffee?
Drink it in the morning in place of breakfast, and eat your first meal about an hour later. ICMR-NIN's 2024 guidelines say to avoid tea and coffee for at least one hour before and after meals, because the tannins in them get in the way of iron absorption. A ghee coffee with your paratha breaks that rule and adds fat to a full meal.
Mind the caffeine. The same guidelines put a 150 ml cup of brewed coffee at 80 to 120 mg of caffeine and instant coffee at 50 to 65 mg, and advise staying under 300 mg a day. A large café mug can hold two of those cups. Keep coffee out of the late afternoon if it keeps you awake. If your morning habit is ghee in warm water instead, that has its own page: ghee on an empty stomach.
Does ghee coffee break a fast?
Yes, if your fast means no calories: a teaspoon of ghee is about 44 kcal and a tablespoon about 112. For a religious vrat, follow your family's rule. For 16:8 intermittent fasting done for weight, many people drink it knowing it is a "fat fast", and the calories still count in the day. The fasting side is on ghee for intermittent fasting, and keto macros on the ghee keto guide.
What are the side effects of ghee coffee?
The common ones are loose motions, reflux, and slow weight gain. Fat on an empty stomach speeds up the gut for some people, coffee and fat together can bring on heartburn, and a tablespoon a day adds about 112 kcal that is easy to forget. Drop to half a teaspoon, or stop, if any of these start.
Cholesterol is the one to watch over months. Ghee is about 62% saturated fat, and ICMR-NIN notes that too much coffee is itself linked to higher total and LDL cholesterol, higher blood pressure, and an irregular heartbeat. If your LDL is high, get your doctor's view before making this a daily cup; our page on ghee and cholesterol has the numbers. On weight, a cup only helps if it replaces something bigger; more on ghee for weight loss.
Who should skip ghee coffee?
Skip it, or ask your doctor first, if you have gallstones or have had gallbladder pain, acid reflux, high LDL or heart disease, or a doctor-set low-fat diet, or take diabetes medicine that can cause low sugar if you miss breakfast. Skip the coffee in pregnancy, where ICMR-NIN warns that too much caffeine can affect the baby's growth, and for children and teens. Stop and see a doctor if you get pain under the right ribs after fatty food, or loose motions that last more than a few days.
Other conditions where the doctor sets your fat are listed under who should not eat ghee. If heartburn is your main problem, see ghee for acid reflux before trying this cup.
A 7-point ghee coffee checklist
If you want to try black coffee with ghee, this is the routine that holds up. Screenshot it for the kitchen.
- One cup a day. Measure the ghee with a real 5 ml teaspoon.
- Count that teaspoon in your day's 1 to 2 tsp of ghee.
- Blend it 20 to 30 seconds. Stirring leaves an oil slick.
- No sugar, no honey. Otherwise it is just a richer milk coffee.
- Instead of breakfast, not with it. Eat your first meal an hour later.
- Stay under 300 mg of caffeine a day: about three 150 ml cups of brewed coffee, fewer if your mug is big.
- Loose motions, reflux, or pain under the right ribs: stop, and see a doctor if it comes back.
Which ghee for your coffee?
In black coffee you taste the ghee directly, so a stale or burnt jar shows up at once. Good ghee smells of toasted milk when warm and melts clear, with no white grit. How to check a jar is on how to identify pure ghee, and our ranking of the cow ghee on sale is best cow ghee in India. No ghee changes what the trials found; the amount matters more than the brand.
We make and sell ghee, so weigh this with that in mind. For the cup we would use our own A2 Gir cow ghee: grass-fed Gir milk set to curd overnight, churned, and cooked in a matki on a wood chulha, made after you order, with a video of your jar sent on WhatsApp. At ₹2,399 a litre, a 5 ml teaspoon costs about ₹12. Our Jafarabadi buffalo ghee is the richer jar we keep for halwa and paratha. We test every month against the FSSAI limits; the steps are on how we make ghee.
Each order is cooked after you place it, and the packing video is of that batch. Past order videos are on the shop.
FAQ
Can I add ghee to filter coffee with milk?
You can, and it tastes good, but it is not the black coffee drink people mean. A 150 ml filter coffee with 100 ml whole milk and 2 tsp sugar is already about 100 kcal, and a teaspoon of ghee takes it to about 145. If you want ghee in filter coffee, drop the sugar first, use toned milk, and keep the ghee to half a teaspoon.
Is cow ghee or buffalo ghee better in coffee?
Cow ghee suits coffee better for most people. It melts quickly, tastes lighter, and its toasted-milk smell sits well with coffee. Buffalo ghee is whiter and richer and sets firm in a cool room, so it blends fine but tastes heavier in a black cup. The calories and saturated fat per teaspoon are close, so choose by taste. Both melt fully in coffee that is still steaming.
Can people with diabetes drink black coffee with ghee?
Often yes, without sugar, but check with your doctor first. Ghee barely raises blood sugar by itself, while sugar and milk in regular coffee do. The risk is different: skipping breakfast on some diabetes medicines can cause low sugar, and the saturated fat still counts toward your daily limit. Keep it to a teaspoon, and keep eating a real first meal on time.
Does ghee in coffee help with constipation?
No study has tested ghee coffee for constipation. Coffee on its own makes some people want to go to the toilet, and fat can loosen stools a little, which is why some people notice a change. Fibre, water, and daily movement do far more. If you have been constipated for more than a few weeks, or see blood, see a doctor rather than adding ghee.
Is ghee coffee an Ayurvedic drink?
No. Ayurveda texts describe ghee with warm milk, rice, and medicines, but coffee is not part of those classical recipes. Ghee coffee is a modern drink that came from the American "bulletproof" coffee trend, made with butter and MCT oil, and Indian cooks swapped in ghee. You can like it for taste, but it carries no special Ayurvedic standing.
Can teenagers or children drink ghee coffee?
We would not give it to them. The ghee is fine as food, but coffee brings caffeine, which children and teens are better off without, and a fat coffee can take the place of a real breakfast they need for school. Give children their ghee on roti, dal, or khichdi, and keep coffee for adults.
