Ghee for Dark Circles: Does It Work and How to Apply It

Updated 11 min read rice grain • at night • patch test

Ghee for dark circles helps one kind only: dry, thin, tired-looking skin under the eyes, where one rice grain of ghee patted on at night keeps the skin softer so the shadow looks less harsh. It does not fade brown pigment, shrink puffy bags, or fill hollows, and no study has tested ghee on dark circles. Patch test first, and keep it out of the eye.

Can ghee remove dark circles?

No, ghee cannot remove dark circles, but it can make some of them look softer. On dry, thin under-eye skin, a rice grain of ghee at night slows water loss, so by morning the skin looks smoother and the shadow less sharp. Brown pigment, puffy bags, and hollows stay as they are. Give it 4 weeks, then judge.

The reason it helps some people and not others is that "dark circles" is several different problems under one name. A 2016 review in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology sorts them into pigment (brown), blood vessel (blue, pink, or purple), structural (shadows from the shape of the face), and mixed. Mayo Clinic lists eczema, rubbing the eyes, genetics, ageing, sun, and pigment changes as common causes, and notes that pigment changes are more common in brown skin. A fat on the skin touches only one of those: dryness.

This is a common worry in India, and a young one. The same review cites an Indian study of 200 people with dark circles in which 95 (47.5%) were aged 16 to 25 and 162 (81%) were women. If that is you, the table below matters more than which jar you use.

Which type of dark circles do you have?

Stand at a window in daylight and gently pull the skin under one eye towards your ear with a fingertip. The JCAD review describes this stretch test: true pigment keeps its colour when stretched, a shadow fades or disappears, and blood-vessel darkness spreads out and can turn more purple.

Type

What you see

Stretch test

Where ghee fits

Brown (pigment)

Brown or grey-brown skin under both eyes, often darker on brown skin, after sun, eczema, or rubbing

Stays the same colour when you gently stretch the lower lid

Softens dry skin only. It does not fade the brown. Sunscreen and a dermatologist do more.

Blue or purple (blood vessels)

Bluish, pinkish, or purple tint, worse when tired, often with thin skin

Colour spreads out and can look more purple when stretched

May make thin, dry skin look less harsh. A cold compress does more in the morning.

Puffy (fluid)

Swollen lower lids that cast a shadow, worse on waking or after salty food, allergies, or crying

Shadow shrinks as the day goes on

Little. Head raised on a pillow, cold compress, and treating allergies do more.

Hollow (shadow)

A dip or groove between the lower lid and cheek, more with age or weight loss

Looks lighter when you stretch the skin or light your face from the front

None. A fat cannot fill a hollow. Fillers are a clinic decision.

Mixed

Two or three of the above at once, which is common

Part fades on stretching, part stays

Only for the dry-skin part. Judge it on that alone.

Most people have more than one type. If the brown stays when you stretch, sun and old eczema are the likely reasons, and a dermatologist can confirm it. If the eczema is still active, ghee is not the first step; what ghee can and cannot do there is on ghee for eczema.

How to use ghee for dark circles overnight

Patch test, then pat one rice grain of warmed ghee along the bone under each eye at bedtime and rinse it off in the morning.

1. Patch test first

A rice grain of ghee on the inner arm or behind the ear, left overnight. Skip the under-eye if it itches, reddens, or bumps.

2. Clean, dry skin at night

Wash off kajal, mascara, and sunscreen. Pat the skin dry.

3. Take one rice grain per eye

Use a clean, dry spoon, never a finger that has been in the kitchen jar or near food.

4. Warm it on the ring finger

Rub the ring fingers together for a few seconds so the ghee melts clear.

5. Pat, do not rub

Tap it along the bone under the eye, from the inner corner outwards. Stay about a finger-width below the lashes so it does not melt into the eye.

6. Rinse in the morning

Wash with plain water, then sunscreen before you go outdoors.

Less is the rule here. Pages that say "massage warm ghee in circles for a few minutes" and "see results in a week" do not cite anything, and hard rubbing is one of the causes Mayo Clinic lists for dark circles. Body heat melts ghee, so a thick layer slides into the eye by midnight. If you wake with blurry vision, you used too much.

Patch test, and who should skip it

Skip ghee under the eyes if you have a milk allergy, active eczema or a rash around the eyes, an eye infection, or very oily skin that breaks out easily. Ghee can hold a trace of milk protein, as we explain on milk protein in ghee. Ghee inside the eye is a separate practice, done in an Ayurveda clinic, and it is covered on ghee for eyes and netra basti. This page is about the skin below the eye only.

What the ghee should smell and look like

The skin under the eye is the thinnest on the face, so the ghee has to be good. At our kettle in Gir Somnath, a batch that cooks too long turns dark, bitter, and smells burnt; one taken off too early stays cloudy and keeps water, so it spoils fast. We do not jar either. Put the same test to your own jar: warm a little on the back of your hand. It should melt clear and smell of toasted milk. A sour, soapy, or burnt smell means it stays off your face. How ghee goes off is on does ghee go bad.

Grain is fine. Winter ghee sets in fine grains and summer ghee stays liquid, and a rice grain of either melts on a warm fingertip. Why ghee turns grainy, the question customers send us most on WhatsApp, is on why ghee is grainy. If plain ghee feels too heavy on your skin, washed ghee is the lighter household version; how it is made is on shata dhauta ghrita.

Does the vitamin K or vitamin A in ghee help dark circles?

Not at the amounts ghee holds. The creams that were tested used these vitamins at strengths thousands of times higher than ghee.

The study most pages lean on is a 2004 trial in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology. Fifty-seven Japanese adults put a gel with 2% vitamin K (phytonadione), 0.1% retinol, and 0.1% vitamins C and E under their eyes twice a day for 8 weeks. In 27 of them (47%), the blood-pooling kind of darkness went down. Pigment did not clearly clear, and there was no comparison group.

Now the ghee. USDA FoodData Central lists 8.6 µg of vitamin K and 824 µg of retinol in 100 g of butter oil (ghee). A 2% vitamin K gel holds 2 g, or 2,000,000 µg, in 100 g: more than 200,000 times the vitamin K in the same weight of ghee. A 0.1% retinol gel holds 100,000 µg in 100 g, about 120 times what ghee has. So when a page says "ghee has vitamin K for dark circles", the vitamin is real but the dose is not. Ghee does its work as a fat on the skin, not as a vitamin cream.

The same goes for wrinkles and "anti-ageing" around the eyes: what ghee can do for skin that is losing firmness is on ghee for collagen.

What helps dark circles more than ghee?

Sleep, cold, sunscreen, a raised pillow, and not rubbing your eyes. These are the self-care steps Mayo Clinic gives for mild to moderate dark circles, and each one does more than any fat.

  • Something cold. Mayo Clinic suggests a cold, wet cloth, a chilled teaspoon, or frozen peas wrapped in a cloth, to shrink visible blood vessels. A steel teaspoon from the fridge is the Indian kitchen version.
  • A raised pillow. Sleeping with the head higher stops fluid pooling in the lower lids overnight.
  • More sleep. Short nights alone rarely cause circles, Mayo Clinic says, but they make the ones you have more obvious. What ghee has to do with sleep is on ghee for sleep.
  • Sunscreen, SPF 30 or more. Every day, reapplied every 2 hours outdoors. Sun darkens pigment circles.
  • Hands off. Rubbing and scratching the eyes is on the list of causes. Treat itchy eyes and hay fever, which DermNet lists as a cause of puffy lids.
  • Less alcohol, no smoking. Both are on Mayo Clinic's list, and DermNet links smoking to fat loss under the eyes.
  • A check for anaemia if you are also tired, breathless, or pale. Iron and ghee in the diet are covered on ghee for anaemia, but the blood test comes first.

Ghee vs almond oil or an eye cream for dark circles

For dry under-eye skin, ghee and almond oil do the same job. For the circles themselves, an eye product with a tested ingredient, or sunscreen, does more.

Product

Best for

Watch for

Ghee

Dry, flaky, tight skin under the eyes, at night

No active ingredient for pigment. Can clog pores on oily skin. Melts into the eye if used heavily.

Almond or coconut oil

The same moisturising job as ghee

No better for pigment. Choose plain oil, not a perfumed hair oil.

Eye cream with caffeine, vitamin K, or kojic acid

Mayo Clinic names these three ingredients as ones studies show reduce dark circles to some degree

Results are modest. Price does not tell you the strength.

Sunscreen, SPF 30 or more

Brown circles that get darker after sun

Needs reapplying every 2 hours outdoors. Keep it out of the eye.

Cold compress

Puffy and blue morning circles

Wrap anything frozen in a cloth. Never ice straight on the skin.

For stubborn brown circles, Mayo Clinic says a dermatologist may suggest prescription creams, chemical peels, or laser; for hollows, fillers. Those are clinic decisions. Rinse-off packs for the rest of the face are on ghee face packs and ghee as a night layer on the whole face is on ghee slugging.

When to stop using ghee under the eyes, and when to see a doctor

Stop at the first itch, bump, or sting, and see a doctor for the signs below. We are ghee makers, not doctors; this is where a dermatologist or eye doctor takes over.

Sign

What to do

Itching, redness, or a rash under the eye

Stop. Wash with plain water. It can be a reaction to the ghee or something mixed in it.

Stinging or blurred vision after ghee got into the eye

Rinse the eye with clean water. If it still hurts or blurs, see an eye doctor.

Tiny white bumps or pimples under the eye

Stop for two weeks. The layer was too heavy, or the skin does not suit a fat there.

Darkness or swelling under one eye only, getting worse

See a doctor. Mayo Clinic flags a change under just one eye that worsens over time.

Circles with tiredness, breathlessness, or pale nails and gums

Ask a doctor about a blood test for anaemia. Ghee does not treat it.

Darker skin around the eyes after starting eye drops

Tell the doctor who prescribed them. Some glaucoma drops (bimatoprost) can darken eyelid skin.

If 4 weeks of ghee, sleep, and sunscreen change nothing in your day-28 photo, stop the ghee. It has done what a fat can do, and the rest of the darkness is pigment, blood vessels, or shape.

A 4-week ghee for dark circles checklist

Run it for 4 weeks, then compare the photos. Screenshot the list if it helps.

  1. Stretch test in daylight: note which type you have before you start.
  2. Patch test on the inner arm, overnight.
  3. One rice grain of plain ghee per eye, filled with a dry spoon into a small pot kept for the face.
  4. Pat along the bone, a finger-width below the lashes. Never rub, never in the eye.
  5. Every night for 4 weeks, with 7 to 9 hours of sleep and a raised pillow.
  6. Sunscreen by day, and no rubbing the eyes.
  7. Take a phone photo in the same light on day 1 and day 28, and judge on that.
  8. Stop at once for itching, bumps, or stinging.

Which ghee to use under the eyes?

Near the eyes, the jar matters more than the label: plain ghee with nothing added, that melts clear and smells of toasted milk. Five checks for a pure jar are on how to identify pure ghee, and how curd Bilona (curd churned by hand) differs from cream ghee is on the Bilona method.

We make and sell ghee, so weigh this with that in mind. For a small face pot filled from the same jar as your dal, we would pick our own A2 Gir cow ghee: milk from grass-fed Gir cows, set to curd overnight, churned, and cooked in a matki on a wood chulha, made after you order, with a video of your jar sent on WhatsApp. For paratha and sweets, our Jafarabadi buffalo ghee is the richer jar. We test every month against the FSSAI limits; the steps are on how we make ghee. Our ranking of the cow ghee on sale is on best cow ghee in India.

The face pot and the daily teaspoon

Paratha, halwa, and winter sweets

Each order is cooked after you place it, and the packing video is of that batch. Past order videos are on the shop.

FAQ

Does eating ghee help dark circles?

Not in any way that has been shown. No study has tested eating ghee for dark circles. Ghee carries vitamin A and some vitamin E, but a normal Indian diet with dal, vegetables, and milk already covers these for most people, and eating more fat does not lighten under-eye skin. Keep eating ghee for the food, in the small amounts you already use, and treat the circles with sleep, sunscreen, and the right product for your type.

Is cow ghee or buffalo ghee better under the eyes?

Either works, because both are almost pure milk fat. Cow ghee is softer and melts fast on a fingertip, so a thin layer is easy to pat on. Buffalo ghee sets firmer and needs a few more seconds of warming. What matters more is that the ghee is plain, fresh, and smells of toasted milk when warmed. Spiced, flavoured, or old ghee should never go near the eyes.

Can I mix ghee with almond oil, aloe vera, or turmeric for dark circles?

Keep it plain. Each extra ingredient is one more thing that can sting thin skin or reach the eye. Almond oil does the same job as ghee, so mixing them adds nothing. Aloe vera gel can sting some people. Turmeric stains skin yellow and can irritate, and it does not fade under-eye pigment. If you want an active ingredient, choose an eye product with caffeine, vitamin K, or kojic acid instead.

Can I use ghee under my eyes with retinol or other creams?

Use them on different nights, or ask your dermatologist first. Retinol and acids can make under-eye skin dry and sore, and a fat on top can trap them against the skin and increase stinging. If a dermatologist has prescribed a cream for pigment, follow that plan and do not add ghee on top without asking. On nights with no active cream, a rice grain of ghee is fine.

My child has dark circles. Should I put ghee under their eyes?

Do not start with ghee. Dark circles in children often come with a blocked nose, allergies, or eczema, and those need a doctor to find the cause. Ghee near a child's eyes can also end up in the eyes when they rub them. If the circles come with snoring, mouth breathing, tiredness, or itchy skin, take the child to a paediatrician. Enough sleep and a steady bedtime come first.

Can ghee under the eyes cause milia or pimples?

It can for some people. A thick layer of any fat can sit in the pores of the thin skin around the eyes, and people with oily or acne-prone skin are more likely to get small white bumps or pimples. Use one rice grain per eye, not a spoonful, and wash it off in the morning. If bumps appear, stop for two weeks. Do not squeeze milia; a dermatologist can remove them safely.
