Ghee for Lips: How to Apply It for Dry and Chapped Lips
Ghee for lips works as a simple night balm: a rice-grain to pea-size amount, warmed between clean fingers and pressed onto dry or chapped lips before bed, slows the water loss that leaves them cracked. It will not turn dark lips pink or protect them from the sun, and very cracked lips often do better with petroleum jelly. Patch test first, and stop if it stings or swells.
Is ghee good for dry and chapped lips?
Yes, for plain dryness. A thin layer of ghee at night sits on the lips like a balm and slows the loss of water while you sleep, so flaky, tight lips usually feel softer by morning. It does this as a fat, the way coconut oil or a wax balm does. It is not a medicine, and it does not reach deeper than the surface.
Lips dry out faster than the rest of your face for a reason. The pink part of the lip (the vermilion) has a thin outer layer and no oil glands under it, as a 2022 study of lip skin in Scientific Reports describes. Your cheeks make their own oil; your lips cannot. Licking them adds water that evaporates in minutes and leaves them drier. So any clean fat that stays on the lips overnight helps, and ghee is the one most Indian kitchens already have.
This page is about lips only. Ghee as a night layer on the whole face is on ghee slugging, and if a reel told you to put ghee in your navel for soft lips, that claim is checked on ghee in the belly button. Put the ghee on the lips themselves.
How to apply ghee on lips overnight
Wipe your lips, warm a rice-grain to pea-size amount of ghee between clean fingers, press a thin layer on, and leave it until morning.
1. Wipe and pat dry
Take off lipstick with a damp cloth. Do not scrub, and do not pick at loose skin.
2. Take a rice-grain to pea-size amount
Use a clean, dry spoon or a clean fingertip. Never dip a finger that has just touched food or your mouth.
3. Warm it between two fingers
Grainy winter ghee melts in a few seconds. Warm is enough; never heat it on the stove for your lips.
4. Press it onto the lips
A thin layer on the pink part and the lip line. Pat, do not rub, over cracks.
5. Leave it on overnight
In the morning, wipe the extra. By day, switch to a lip balm with SPF before you step out.
Keep a separate lip pot, and why the ghee changes by season
Do not dip into the kitchen jar with a finger that has touched your mouth. Take a week or two of ghee into a small, clean glass pot with a dry spoon and keep that for your lips. Water and food traces are what spoil ghee, and a lip pot gets both.
The ghee in that pot will not look the same all year. In our kitchen in Gir Somnath, summer milk is lighter and the ghee stays liquid in the jar; winter milk is richer and the same ghee cools to a fine grain. Liquid summer ghee runs off the lips, so use less. Grainy winter ghee needs a few seconds between your fingers to melt. The grain is normal, and it is the question customers send us most on WhatsApp; we explain it on why ghee is grainy.
Smell it before it goes near your mouth. Good ghee smells of toasted milk. A sour, soapy, or paint-like smell means the fat has gone off, and it will sting thin lip skin. How to tell is on does ghee go bad.
Habits that matter more than the ghee
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) puts habits first for chapped lips: stop licking, biting, and picking at them; drink enough water; run a humidifier in the bedroom if the air is dry; and keep metal things like pins and keys away from the lips. An office AC dries lips all day, and a teaspoon of ghee at night cannot undo that if you lick them every few minutes.
Does ghee make lips pink or lighten dark lips?
No. Ghee has no ingredient that bleaches the lip or changes its colour, and we found no study that tested ghee for dark lips. Pages that promise "pink lips in a week" do not cite one either.
What people notice is real, but it is something else. Dry lips are covered in white, dead flakes that make them look dull and patchy. Once the flakes soften and settle, your own lip colour shows through more evenly, and that can look pinker. Your natural colour, sun, and smoking set how dark your lips are. For sun-darkened lips, the AAD advice is a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher before you go outdoors, reapplied every 2 hours outside. Ghee has no SPF.
If one lipstick or toothpaste always leaves your lips dark, dry, or peeling, the product can be the cause, and changing it will do more than any home mix.
Ghee vs Vaseline, coconut oil, or lip balm: which is better?
For everyday dry lips at night, ghee and coconut oil do the same job. For badly cracked lips, petroleum jelly seals better. For daytime outdoors, only a balm with SPF protects.
The AAD says a thick ointment such as white petroleum jelly seals in water longer than waxes or oils, and it names petrolatum, shea butter, mineral oil, and ceramides as ingredients to look for. Ghee is closer to an oil than an ointment. So if your lips are split and sore, a plain petroleum jelly at night for a few days is the stronger choice, and ghee can take over once they have healed. The one thing ghee has over petroleum jelly is that it is food; licking a little off in your sleep does no harm.

Watch for
Ghee
Soft night seal on dry lips; food, so a lick is harmless
No SPF. Can go rancid. Flavoured or spiced ghee irritates.
Petroleum jelly (Vaseline)
Very dry, cracked lips; the AAD says an ointment like it seals longer than waxes or oils
Not food. Thick and shiny by day.
Coconut oil
The same light job as ghee
Sets solid in a cool room. Choose plain oil, not a perfumed hair oil.
Lip balm with SPF 30+
Daytime, outdoors, sun-darkened lips
Skip menthol, camphor, fragrance, and flavour, which the AAD lists as irritants.
Ghee and coconut oil as cooking fats are compared on ghee vs coconut oil. On the lips, pick whichever your skin likes, as long as it is plain.
Can you make a ghee lip balm at home?
Yes. Plain ghee is already a lip balm; a little beeswax melted into it makes a firmer balm that does not run in summer. Most other mixes add risk without adding much.
Mix
How
Our view
Plain ghee
Rice-grain to pea-size at night
Start here. Every extra ingredient is one more thing that can sting.
Ghee and beeswax balm
Melt 1 part beeswax with 3 to 4 parts ghee by weight in a bowl over hot water, pour into a clean tin, let it set
Firmer, easier to carry in summer. Make a small batch and use it within a few weeks.
Ghee and sugar scrub
A pinch of fine sugar in ½ tsp ghee, 20 seconds of light rubbing, once a week
Only on flaky lips with no cracks. Never on bleeding or split skin.
Ghee and honey
A thin coat on dry lips, wiped off after 10 to 15 minutes
Sticky, and it tempts you to lick, which dries lips again. Plain ghee does the same job overnight.
Ghee and turmeric
Often shared as a "pink lips" mask
Skip it. It stains, it can sting cracked skin, and it does not change lip colour.
Ghee with essential oils or menthol
Peppermint, eucalyptus, or camphor for a tingle
Skip it. The AAD lists these as ingredients that irritate lips and slow healing.
For the beeswax balm, use a clean, dry tin and a dry spoon, and melt it over hot water rather than on a direct flame. Pour it while it is still liquid, and let it set with the lid off so no water drips back in. Honey on the lips is a different thing from eating ghee and honey together; if you want to take them as a spoon, the ratio by weight is on ghee and honey.
How long does ghee take to heal chapped lips?
Mildly dry lips usually feel softer after the first night or two. Cracked lips take longer, often a week or more, and only if the licking and the dry air stop too.
Use a rough timeline. After 1 to 3 nights, flakes should be fewer and the lips less tight. After a week, small cracks should be closing. The AAD advises seeing a dermatologist if lips are no better after 2 to 3 weeks of care, because an allergy, an infection, or sun damage can look like ordinary chapping. Do not keep adding more ghee to a problem that is not getting better.
Who should not put ghee on lips, and when to stop
Skip ghee, or stop, if any of the signs below show up. We are ghee makers, not doctors; this is where a pharmacist, doctor, or dermatologist takes over.
Sign
What to do
Small painful blisters or a tingling spot
Likely a cold sore. Keep ghee and fingers off it and ask a pharmacist or doctor.
Swelling, itching, or a rash after ghee
Stop. It can be a reaction to the ghee or something mixed into it. Rinse with plain water.
Cracks at the corners of the mouth that keep coming back
Often more than dry skin. See a doctor, and ask whether a blood test for anaemia is needed.
Peeling, cracked lips that are no better after 2 to 3 weeks
See a dermatologist. The AAD says this can point to an allergy, an infection, or sun damage.
A sore, rough, or crusted patch that does not heal
See a doctor. Do not cover it with ghee and wait.
Long-lasting dry lips are not always about the weather. In the Scientific Reports study, 109 people with chronic cheilitis (long-running inflamed, peeling lips) were compared with healthy people. Their lips lost water faster, 90.8% had peeling and 74.3% had chapping, and allergic skin conditions, anaemia, and moving between indoor and outdoor work were linked to the problem. That is why lips that stay cracked for weeks need a doctor, not a new home mix.
- If you have eczema on or around the lips, ask your dermatologist before adding any fat. What ghee can and cannot do for eczema is on ghee for eczema.
- If you get breakouts around the mouth, keep the ghee on the pink part of the lip only. Acne and ghee are covered on ghee for acne.
- If you have a milk allergy, patch test carefully or skip it. Ghee can hold a trace of milk protein, as we explain on milk protein in ghee.
A 7-night ghee for lips checklist
Try it for a week with these rules, then decide. Screenshot the list if it helps.
- One small jar or pot kept only for your lips, filled with a dry spoon.
- Plain ghee that smells of toasted milk. No flavour, spice, or perfume.
- Patch test first: a dab on the inner arm, and wait a day.
- A rice-grain to pea-size amount, warmed between clean fingers, at night.
- Stop licking your lips. Saliva dries them faster than any balm can seal them.
- Lip balm with SPF 30 or higher by day when you go outdoors.
- Stop for blisters, swelling, or a rash, and see a doctor if cracks last 2 to 3 weeks.
Dry heels need a heavier version of the same idea, with more ghee and socks overnight; that is on ghee for cracked heels.
Which ghee to use on lips?
On the lips, the jar matters more than the brand name: plain ghee with nothing added, that smells of toasted milk when warmed and melts clear. Flavoured, spiced, or perfumed ghee stays off the mouth. Five checks for a pure jar are on how to identify pure ghee, and how curd Bilona (curd churned by hand) differs from cream ghee is on the Bilona method.
We make and sell ghee, so weigh this with that in mind. For a lip pot filled from the same jar as your dal, we would pick our own A2 Gir cow ghee: milk from grass-fed Gir cows, set to curd overnight, churned, and cooked in a matki on a wood chulha, made after you order, with a video of your jar sent on WhatsApp. For paratha and sweets, our Jafarabadi buffalo ghee is the richer jar. We test every month against the FSSAI limits; the steps are on how we make ghee. Our ranking of the cow ghee on sale is on best cow ghee in India.
Each order is cooked after you place it, and the packing video is of that batch. Past order videos are on the shop.
FAQ
Can I apply ghee on my lips during the day?
You can, but it is not the best daytime choice. Ghee has no sun protection, and sun is a common reason lips turn dark and rough. It also melts on a hot day and picks up dust. By day, use a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher when you go outdoors and reapply it every 2 hours outside, as the American Academy of Dermatology advises. Keep the ghee for bedtime, when it can sit undisturbed for hours.
Can ghee on lips cause pimples around the mouth?
It can for some people. A thick layer that spreads past the lip line onto skin with oil glands can block pores, especially if you already get breakouts around the mouth or chin. Keep the layer thin and on the pink part of the lips only, and wipe the extra in the morning. If small bumps appear around the mouth after a week, stop and see whether they settle before you try again.
Is cow ghee or buffalo ghee better for lips?
Both are almost pure milk fat, so either softens dry lips. Cow ghee is softer and melts quickly between the fingers, which makes a thin layer easy. Buffalo ghee sets firmer and needs a little more warming. What matters far more than the animal is that the ghee is plain, fresh, and smells of toasted milk. If you keep one jar for the kitchen, use that and take your lip portion with a dry spoon.
Is it safe if I swallow a little ghee from my lips?
Yes. Ghee is food, so the small amount you lick off while sleeping is harmless, which is one reason people like it more than petroleum jelly on lips. That is also why the jar must be clean. A lip pot that has been touched with dirty fingers, left open near the stove, or kept for months can go rancid, and you would not want to eat it. Throw it out if it smells sour or like old paint.
Can I put ghee on my lips if I wear lipstick?
Yes, at night after you take the lipstick off. Long-wear and matte lipsticks can leave lips dry, so a thin layer of ghee before bed helps them recover. Do not layer ghee under lipstick in the morning; the fat makes lipstick slide and smudge. Wipe the ghee off, let the lips settle, and use a plain lip balm under lipstick instead. If one lipstick always makes your lips peel or itch, stop using it.
How long can I keep a small lip pot of ghee?
Fill a small, clean glass pot with a week or two of ghee at a time instead of keeping one pot for months. Lips and fingers carry moisture and food traces, and those shorten the life of any fat. Keep the lid shut and the pot away from the stove and sunlight. Top it up from the main jar with a dry spoon, and never pour unused ghee from the lip pot back into the kitchen jar.
